Must see places of Sri Lanka

If you only have a short time to visit the Island, then I recommend visiting these amazing sites as you will definitely not be disappointed.

Pinnawalla elephant orphanage

Pinnawalla elephant orphanage is a highlight of any Srilankan trip located near Kandy. It is a very special place. At this amazing orphanage I was given the chance to feed, play, bathe and give elephants a mud spa. It was lovely to watch them having fun, splashing each other in the river.  I remember touching one of the elephants as they walked up from the river guided by their handlers it was a magical experience that I will never forget. Around the enclosure you can also see elephants breaking branches with their long trunks and eating them as whole. After having a great time at the orphanage you can head to some of the local cafes located nearby for some cheap but delicious eats. The view surrounding these cafes is pretty special as the backdrop is often a part of the magical hills of Kandy.

Singiriya, lion rock

Sigiriya is a heritage listed site and one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka also known as the ‘Palace and Fortress in the sky’. Located on a massive rocky plateau high above the sea level it provides you with one of the impressive sites you will see on the island. Having heard a lot about the site from friends who have visited the palace it is definitely on my bucket list of things to do.

Cave Art found halfway up, drawn from those who once lived in the palace.

Yala National Park

Traveling to Yala National Park there is so many wonderful things to do Safari rides, Beach Walks, site seeing and bird watching.

The Safari Ride will give you the chance to be up close and personal with all sorts of wild life in some of their natural habitats. Seeing monkeys swinging up and down from the branches of lush green trees.  Deer running past you as you drive through the bumpy roads of the jungle. Buffalo laying lazily in the muddy waters of the lake and the majestic sites of hippos swimming in the waters of the jungle. Traveling in the national park one of my best experiences was watching the sun set by the river and seeing the buffalos bathe.

If you love birds, then I recommend you go bird watching the park is home to many birds including some that migrate from around the world its spectacular and the best time to go bird watching is early in the morning.

The park also has some amazing beaches great for spending time with my family relaxing and unwinding from the excitement of the Safari.
