Activities in and around Nuwara Eliya

If your traveling around the town of Nuwara Eliya also known around Srilanka as “Little England” I recommend visiting some of the following sites it will provide a cool experience filed with scenic views that are very  relaxing .

 George lake

Gregory Lake is a serene environment great for family picnic, riding horses, paddle boating or taking a leisurely stroll around the lake.

Strawberry Fields

For an enchanting experience, visit one of the many strawberry fields in Nuwara Eliya. Fruit grown in the area are of high-quality. Visiting the local farms, you will be surrounded by lush mountainous backdrops and sweet smells. Some of the farmers let visitors to pick some of the fresh strawberries to taste they are absolutely delicious and you are also given the chance to make fresh jam which can be tried with hot bread, yum.

  Hakgala Botanical Garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden is situated on the Nuwara Eliya-Badulla main road, 16 km from Nuwara Eliya. It provides an impressive display of flowers and plants which fill your body with sweet smells from all around. The best time of the year to visit the garden is during the spring season as many of the flowers take bloom this time of the year. The garden is full of different displays that provided a unique experience. I suggest visiting the Hakgala's Rose garden. where the sights and scents of these glorious blooms can be experienced in their many

The garden also provides an ideal habitat for a range of birds and butterflies and if you visit the park early in the morning when it’s a bit quitter and less crowded you might even have the chance to spot one or two of these majestic creatures.

Visit Horton Plains

The plains provided some of the best hiking in the area with trails that are filled with picturesque views. I recommend traveling early in the morning as the view from the peak, top of the platu known as worlds end is remarkable at this time of the day unhindered by the mist that surrounds the area. When hiking in the area I recommend you take a local with you so they can help guide you through the lush forests.  Along some parts of the trail there are some small lakes and waterfalls which are a beautiful site to see.  Horton Plains is also bird watcher’s paradise.

Also while in the national park defiantly visit Baker’s falls, it is very beautiful and a great location to take a few pics on the island. The park is also home to many wildlife of which most commonly seem is deer. You’ll probably also see beautiful lizards, some of them boasting outlandishly fluorescent green scales.

Tea Plantation

Traveling around Nuwara Eliya there are also many great tea plantations if you have some time I would recommend taking a look especially if you can’t make it to Kandy to visit the Ceylon tea museum you will not be disappointed.
